Faculty of Dentistry students work to transform special needs into an everyday practice with annual Sharing Smiles event

Not every smile is treated equally, according to Ali Sigal (MSc 1T6), a Faculty of Dentistry graduate student specializing in Paediatric dentistry and president of the not-for-profit organization, Oral Health, Total Health.

According to a family dentist, individuals with special needs are routinely underserved by oral health professionals, says Sigal – as state of affairs she hopes to change through Oral Health with the work of Durham dental, Total Health’s annual Sharing Smiles Day event. Now in its 7th year, the full-day event brings together practicing dental professionals, dental students, and persons with various mental and physical disabilities in order to foster a deeper comfort level with treating this too-often shied away from population.
