One student is making a big difference in breaking down the barriers of access to care. Ali Sigal, first year University of Toronto, Faculty of Dentistry student, and Chair of the not-for-profit organization Oral Health, Total Health (OHTH), is responding to a critical, unmet need with a smile, Sharing Smiles Day, that is.

Oral Health, Total Health (OHTH), a program affiliated with Mount Sinai’s Department of Dentistry’s Clinic for Persons with Disabilities, hosted the first charity-outreach event of its kind, Sharing Smiles Day, on March 28, 2009. The program was created to bring awareness, educate dental health professionals and communicate the importance of good oral health among persons with special needs. It featured games and face painting, a luncheon, speeches and demonstrations in partnership with Colgate – on proper oral care.

“It was a day where dental students and dentists could build positive relationships with persons with special needs in hopes to foster comfort amongst the participants,” says Ali, Chair and Founder of the program. I am proud to say we were successful in achieving this goal! Within the first 30 minutes, the venue had transformed- hugs were shared, smiles filled the room, it was amazing to see….
