CHCH.com - The special dental needs of perons with special needs

Most of us hand-pick our dentists based on different criteria -- convenient proximity, quick appointments, a delicate touch. But for those persons with special needs, there is no selection process. Many are turned away before they can even communicate their issues. Maria Hayes tells us about an up and coming dental student in Toronto, who's hoping to change that. Community Innovation Finalist: Oral Health, Total Health's Sharing Smiles Day -- London

2013 Finalist - Community Innovation Pillar Community Innovation Awards Four years ago, students at Western University's School of Dentistry brought Oral Health, Total Health's Sharing Smiles Day to London. They have demonstrated an innovative approach and strong commitment to the goals of the day: to have a fun-filled day where the attitudinal barriers between dental students and people with special needs can be removed, positive relationships fostered, and the importance of oral health emphasized. People who attend the event are motivated to follow through on suggestions from the dental students and become less fearful and less anxious to see a dentist. Dental care is one of the top unmet health care needs for people with intellectual disabilities who experience a greater incidence of oral disease than the wider population. Community Living London has been a partner in the event since it began. At the 4th annual Sharing Smiles Day at Western University in March 2013, over 75 people attended and received one-on-one care, attention and instruction for oral health. Toronto & London's OHTH Sharing Smiles Day 2010

Sharing Smiles Day is one of Oral Health, Total Health's cornerstone events, which brings together persons with special needs and dental students from the respective communities for a fun-filled, educational day. The purpose of these events, are to foster positive relationships between the two groups, with the dental students gaining comfort and familiarity interacting with persons with special needs, and that upon graduation, will feel confident and comfortable treating these individuals within their own clinics; thus, making the future of access to oral health care better for this currently under-served population. Currently, there are three OHTH branches, located in Toronto (University of Toronto & George Brown), London (University of Western & Fanshawe) and Ottawa (Algonquin College), with the hope of expanding and hosting OHTH initiatives in every University-Faculty of Dentistry and Public Dental Hygiene College across Canada. Please visit our website at www.ohth.ca for more information pertaining to Oral Health, Total Health and how you can get involved.
